Duration
This concert will last approximately 60 minutes, with no interval.
The programme begins with two contrasting Scarlatti Sonatas, the first emotional and expressive, the second lyrical and sprightly in turns. Brahms’ Six Piano Pieces, Op 118 form the heart of the recital. Comprising four Intermezzi, a Ballade and a Romance, they all contrast in mood, but are surreptitiously linked by a three-note motive, cleverly transformed so that each one stands as an individualised jewel. Chopin’s two Nocturnes, Op 27 are also linked, this time by tonality. Described by David Dubal as ‘ballades in miniature’ the first has a mainly foreboding mood, whereas the second could be described as an elegant exercise in ornamentation of its highly vocalised melody. An evocative ‘Night Sky, Distant Waters’ by the contemporary South African composer Peter Klatzow precedes the final piece of the evening – Debussy’s L’isle Joyeuse. Moving from its improvisatory opening dance, the music ends in a magnificent amplification of its opening bars.
