The opening theme repeats itself three times with contrasting episodes interspersed in between\, before ending with a typically Schumann-esque epilogue. Two works by Clara Schumann follow next\, her fiery Deuxième Scherzo demonstrating great bravura and virtuosity and a much more serene Romance. The performance reaches its emotional high point in Schumann’s Carnaval\, one of the most demanding works in the piano repertoire\, which consists of twenty short pieces depicting the festive season preceding Lent. A recurring motif runs throughout all twenty movements\, despite each one being entirely different in mood and character. Alongside other Schumann’s compositions\, Carnaval was at first considered ‘too difficult for the general public’ to quote the composer himself. Chopin was famously critical of the work\, stating that it was 'not music at all'. Ravel however did not share this opinion and went on to orchestrate it\, following other composers such as Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov. Despite its tremendous technical difficulty\, this masterpiece of piano writing remains one of Schumann's most performed works today.\n\n\nBOOK TICKETS\n\n\n[AIGetTwitterFeeds ai_username='PianoWeekFest' ai_numberoftweets='3' ai_tweet_title='Your Title']\n
