Whilst celebrating the union between music and visual arts\, it helps the listeners to delve deeper into philosophy\, literature\, legends from North Europe as well as into ancient cultures from the Mediterranean and Asia.In the second half of the programme\, Yuki Negishi offers the audience a piece which\, in her own words\, ‘basks in some of the most open-faced\, exuberant music Chopin ever wrote’. An eight-measure introduction of the Ballade no. 3 is its ingenuously smiling entrance\, leading to a main theme that is no less benign but that hints at some seriousness. After an unusually graceful ending in comparison to the other three of Chopin’s ballades comes Schumann’s Op. 20. Of whimsy\, which is one of the meanings of the word humoresque\, there is far more implied than real playfulness in the humoresque according to Schumann. In appreciation of the work\, one must rely on the composer’s explanation of humour as ‘a way of looking on the emotions with ironic detachment’.
