In an eclectic programme of repertoire for four hands, festival directors Samantha Ward and Maciej Raginia combine famous works by Fauré and Brahms with new piano transcriptions of some of the most iconic compositions by the Argentine tango composer and bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla. Opening with a suite of six short pieces, which Fauré wrote for Hélène Bardac (the title Dolly), daughter of the French singer Emma Bardac who was a mutual love interest of both Debussy and Fauré, Samantha and Maciej take the listeners on the journey through the composer’s whimsical titles behind which lies a vivid world of childhood memories. Brahms’s set of Sixteen Waltzes Op. 39 follows next, originally written for piano duet in Vienna in 1865 and intended as the composer’s tribute to the ballroom dance of waltz, particularly fashionable in the capital of the Austrian Empire from the 1780s. Whilst implementing a simple binary form, each piece within the cycle offers a unique depiction of the waltz thanks to the intricate use of keys, contrasting tempi and textures. The concert is brought to a close with a selection of three piano transcriptions from Astor Piazzolla’s oeuvre. By merging elements of jazz, dissonance, extended harmonies and improvisation with the Baroque passacaglia technique, the composer creates an extraordinary fusion of tango.
